From the Wood Library-Museum’s Ben Z. Swanson Collection, the images (above) were extracted from an 1880 broadside from Troy, New York. While transitioning his dental practice between buildings on Fifth and then Fourth Streets, Dr. Joseph S. Carmichael was extracting teeth “Day and Evening” over Hall’s Dry Goods Store on Troy’s Congress Street. To attract patients, Dr. Carmichael offered to administer “no charge” laughing gas with each 25-cent dental extraction.
