I was almost angry when I saw you laughing
I felt guilty going dancing,
in the yellow sun by a magnolia tree outside
swing dancing on Saturday night in the park and
as I drove to the parking garage from yet another
another bike ride home every day, to where there’s
trip home for a change of clothes and a shower
futures to plan and the cat to waltz around my feet
and a new book filled with words I’ll never read
and meeting friends at night to watch trashy
as I flip through pages, waiting for you to tell us
TV shows and eat garlic bread. And when you
something different, for once. We make you feel fragile,
talk about her sometimes I wonder if my husband
both of us—her lungs that need reminding to breathe,
will talk about me that way in fifty years, and
and me reminding you over and over again how she used
sometimes I wonder what statin we put her
to dance. I won’t let you keep her in this room and yet
on, and sometimes I wonder what I’ll make
she is never anywhere else. Only the calendar keeps
for dinner on Sunday. I say that this is my life and
track of the days, it’s been three weeks and time
time flies, can you believe it’s already summer?
goes by slowly but leaves you with an empty feeling but
when we leave we say this place changed us,
those who stay never mention it.
