In the March 2004 issue of the Journal, in the Pain and Regional Anesthesia article by Ginosar et al.  entitled “ED50and ED95of Intrathecal Hyperbaric Bupivacaine Coadministered with Opioids for Cesarean Delivery” (Anesthesiology 2004; 100:676–82), the authors reported the following data:

While we regret the error, it should be noted that there is minimal change in the clinical message from this data: namely that when using a single-shot technique for spinal anesthesia for Cesarean section, doses of intrathecal bupivacaine below the ED95(11 mg) and particularly below the ED50(7.6 mg) are likely to lead to an unacceptably high incidence of anesthesia failure.
